Which relational database engines does Amazon RDS support?

Amazon’s Relational Database Service (RDS) is a tool provided by AWS that handles provisioning, patching, backup, recovery, failure detection and repair of your relational database. This leaves you with more time to concentrate on your data. The whole idea of RDS is to move your relational database to the cloud. It is easy to set up and operate and is also highly scalable, cost-efficient and saves time.

Database engines available to Amazon RDS users

There are currently six database engines available to RDS users. These are Amazon Aurora, MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. The charm behind RDS is that it is fully compatible with these engines, unless, of course, your version is not compatible. Below is a list of versions for each software that are currently compatible with RDS although it is possible this list may change in the future. You can check for any updates on the Amazon FAQ.

You can check out the Amazon Aurora User Guide for details about the Amazon Aurora database versions.

Amazon RDS capabilities

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to setup, operate and scale a relational database in the cloud. Running databases can involve a lot of repetitive management work. The need to stay ahead of growth and not allow your database to become a bottleneck presents a real problem. With Amazon RDS managed database services these problems can be eliminated.

With Amazon RDS you have access to all of the usual capabilities of a familiar MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL database. What this means is that any code, applications, or tools you currently use today with your existing databases should work with Amazon RDS seamlessly. With Amazon RDS you can automatically backup your database and keep your database software up to date with the latest version.

This way, you can benefit from being able to easily scale the compute resources or storage capacity that is associated with your relational database instance. As is the case with all Amazon Web Services, you don’t have to worry about up-front investments, so you pay only for the resources you use.

In our next blog post, we will be delving a bit deeper on this as we highlight 6 Amazing reasons to use RDS with your Database engine.
