Organize AWS resources with 50 Tags per resource

Amazon recently announced via their excellent blog, “Now Organize Your AWS Resources by Using up to 50 Tags per Resource”. So  what does this mean for AWS customers? As we recently highlighted in an earlier blog “Why is the use of tagging for EBS volumes so important in AWS?”, this new announcement will enable customers, to have 50 tags per resource. Woohoo!

Why the need for 50 Tags per resource?

Tagging AWS resources can help to simplify the way you organize and discover resources, allocate costs and control resource access across services. With cloud adoption increasing year on year , the more experienced users within the cloud environment have acquired many instances, with big business analytics and large stores of metadata acquired in the process of running enterprise organizations is essential. With AWS responding to its customers needs, tags have now increased from 10 to 50 per resource. Provided below is a list of AWS Services and resource types that support Tags.

Managing resources

Tags have the ability to use resource groups to filter resources across services and create dashboards to help you manage resources. Some AWS services allow you to control access to resources based on tags by using IAM policies. With the Tag Editor you tag one or more resources at a time in the AWS Management Console. Cost Explorer and cost allocation tags help categorize, track and identify your AWS costs and provide detailed billing reports.Tags will help in avoid leakage and reduce the cost of cloud operations in a very dynamic AWS cloud environment.

What’s next

AWS pride it’s self in meeting customer requirements on an ongoing basis, if there’s a problem AWS have teams of developers to help and assure customers a solution will be reached. With customers asking  When will we have tags for Lambda? and AWSs security Blog writer Durgesh: replying “We are working on supporting tags in all relevant AWS services, including AWS Lambda. We don’t have a date yet for the additional support, but we will announce Lambda tagging on the AWS Security Blog as soon as it is available. AWS will continually be customer oriented.”
